PRINCE GEORGE – A second-half goal from Sydney Daines (Red Deer, Alta.) was the only offence the University of Alberta Pandas needed, as they defeated the UNBC Timberwolves 1-0 to complete a sweep of the weekend doubleheader.

Cassie Bazzarelli (Edmonton, Alta.) made three saves for the clean sheet for Alberta (6-2-2), while Lianna Toopitsin (Prince George, B.C.) turned in a strong game in goal for the Timberwolves (0-10-0) with six saves.

Daines had the game's first good scoring opportunity in the 16th minute, making a nice run off a through ball from Pandas captain Fallon Dickie (St. Albert, Alta.), but her attempt from the edge of the 18-yard box was handled by Toopitsin with ease.

Tianna Pius (Prince George, B.C.) had a pair of opportunities from distance, but Bazzarelli had no trouble handling either one.

The best chance of the first half came late, as a long shot from Aly Parth (Edmonton, Alta.) hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless through 45 minutes.

With snow coming down, the game's only goal came in the 56th minute, as a pass from Karissa McNutt (Edmonton, Alta.) off the right wing sprung Daines coming up the middle. With a Timberwolves defender coming back on her and Toopitsin coming out to challenge, Daines calmly slotted the ball into the open net from the top of the 18-yard box for the decisive marker.

The Timberwolves had a great chance to take a point in the 89th minute, as Bazzarelli had to dive to stop an attempt from Sydney Wilson (Prince George, B.C.) headed for the bottom right corner to preserve the clean sheet.

Alberta returns home to face the UBC Okanagan Heat (4-6-0) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Mountain time, while UNBC will battle the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (1-9-0) on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Pacific.
