Griffins Open Weekend With 2-0 Shutout Win Over Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The MacEwan University Griffins defeated the hometown University of Winnipeg Wesmen 2-0 Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

With the win the Griffins improve their Canada West regular season record to 4-2-1. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 1-5-1.

MacEwan's first goal came in the 33rd minute when a Wesmen defender put the ball into her own goal. Second year midfield Alexa Adams scored her first goal of the season in the 47th minute.

Third year goalkeeper Madison Perry, making her first start of the season stopped all five Wesmen shots directed her way. Fifth year Wesmen goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson made eight saves in the contest.

MacEwan had opportunities early in the contest as they were rewarded four corner kicks but could not convert on any of those chances.

Winnipeg had their best chance of the opening half off a Maeghan Lindsay free kick but Perry stood her ground making the save.

The Griffins got on the board in the 33rd minute as a clearing pass in the Wesmen goal area went off a Wesmen defender and into the net to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

Adams scored the Griffins second goal in the 47th minute taking a pass inside the box from Samantha Gouveia and beat Thorkelsson with a low shot inside the post.

MacEwan had 19 total shots compared to eight for the Wesmen. The Griffins had the advantage in corner by a 4-3 margin.

The Griffins will stay in Winnipeg to face the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday afternoon. Winnipeg will be in action also on Sunday against the Mount Royal Cougars at 4:00 p.m. at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
