WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team beat the Alberta Pandas 1-0 at Wayne Fleming Arena on Friday, November 28 night.
 
With the victory Manitoba's record improves to 8-4-1 while Alberta's record drops to 8-5-0.
 
"We're the two best defensive teams in the conference for a reason and you saw that tonight," said Bisons head coach Jon Rempel.
 
Both Bisons goalie Rachel Dyck and Pandas goalie Lindsey Post were perfect in the first period both making 10 saves. Manitoba's captain Maggie Litchfield-Medd took a tripping penalty late in the period but the Bisons easily handled the Pandas power play unit.
 
In the second period the game remained scoreless until midway through the period, when in front of the net the visiting team's defense put the puck on second year forward Charity Price's stick, giving her a golden opportunity that she would score on. Dyck remained perfect after two periods making another 10 saves in the second.
 
The third period was a display of both teams' penalty killing abilities. The home team successfully killed two penalties while the visitors killed three. Both teams went 0/4 on the power play on the night. Intensity picked up late in the period but both teams were unable to put the puck in the net.
 
"Both teams penalty kills were quite exceptional," said Rempel. "You would like to have your penalty kill and your power play going at the same time but that doesn't always happen so you have to find ways to make it work."
 
Manitoba's defence made the third period easy for Dyck who only had to make three saves in the third. Dyck earned a shutout making 23 stops on the night.
 
"We blocked a ton of shots in front of (Dyck)," said Rempel. "We did a good job of keeping the puck to the outside limiting chances and Rachel made big saves when we needed her to."
 
"I hope we play with more energy tomorrow," said Rempel, "I'm hoping we get back to our game plan of dump and chase and cycling the puck."
 
The Bisons and Pandas have a matinee rematch tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 29) at Wayne Fleming Arena. Puck drop is at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be both teams final conference regular season game of 2014.
