The University of Regina women's hockey team defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies in overtime for the second straight night, winning 1-0 on a Kylie Gavelin marker.
The Huskies controlled the tempo for the first minute of overtime, but it didn't take long after that for the Cougars to strike. Triston Riemer handled the puck in her own end and played it up the right boards. Kupper was the first one to it and she chipped it up the side where Gavelin picked it up, and rifled a low shot that slid under the pad of Cassidy Hendricks.
The goal marks Gavelin's eighth of the season, which is good enough for fourth in the conference.
Jennifer Schmidt (pictured) earned her fourth win of the season, stopping all 27 shots that were directed at her.
Her second shutout of the season moves her into sole possession of first place in Cougars history with seven career shutouts.
Hendricks stopped 36 shots in the loss.
The first period displayed some sloppy play from both teams, with multiple turnovers that led to chances on net. Neither team could capitalize, however, and the period came to a close without any score.
The pace picked up in the second period, as the teams cleaned up the turnovers and had more chances on goal. The Cougars killed off nearly 90 seconds on a Husky five-on-three advantage near the end of the period, and the frame ended with no score.
Both goalies were flawless through 40 minutes, but neither Schmidt nor Hendricks were tested with any quality chances.
Desperation seemed to set in as the third period rolled around, and both goalies were eventually tested. The best chance of the game came with 1:22 remaining, as Gavelin and Stephanie Sawchuk broke in on a 2-on-1. Gavelin elected to shoot and Hendricks handled the attempt, but the rebound bounced right to Sawchuk, who seemed to have an open cage until Hendricks raced across and directed the shot wide with her blocker.
The Cougars improve to 3-5-3-1 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 4-3-3-2.
Regina will head to Calgary next weekend for a two-game set against the Mount Royal Cougars (0-1-8-2).
