Huskie forward Lauren Zary scored her first CIS goal 2:52 into overtime to lift the No. 9 ranked University of Saskatchewan to a 4-3 win over the No. 8 ranked University of Calgary Dinos Friday night at Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.
Zary took a pass from Rachel Johnson to the left of Dino goalie Hayley Dowling and cut hard behind the Calgary net before coming around the other side with a backhand wrap around that snuck just inside the far post.
With the win the Huskies improve to 4-3 on the season, while Calgary drops to 4-0-3.
The Huskies needed to come from behind to force overtime after surrendering three straight second period goals to the Dinos.
Kandace Cook and Rachel Johnson scored back-to-back goals for Saskatchewan with the Huskies trailing 3-1 late in the second.
From just in front of the crease, Kandace Cook tipped home her fourth goal of the season over the shoulder of Calgary goaltender Hayley Dowling on a Julia Flinton slap shot from the point at 19:18.
Rachel Johnson would knot the game up on the power-play for the Huskies with a quick shot glove side on Dowling just 2:05 into the third period.
Saskatchewan got on the board first, early in the opening period. Kaitlin Willoughby finished off a nice passing play from Kira Bannatyne and Karlee Hrenkiw with a shot to the top corner for her third goal of the year at 7:37.
Calgary would even the game up just 33 seconds into the second period. Iya Gavrilova collected a pass from Hailey Wickenheiser at the top of the circle and sent the puck to the front of the net. The puck bounced off the cluster gathered in front of the Huskie net and through the legs of a sliding Cassidy Hendricks.
Just over two minutes later Calgary would take the lead on the power-play. Gavrilova corralled the puck and sent a soft back-hand shot through a crowd that would eventually make it to the back of the Huskie net for her second on the night and seventh of the season at 2:55.
Jessyka Holt made it three straight goals for the Dinos in the second period. Hendricks was able to save a shot from Megan Grenon in the slot, but Holt was waiting on the doorstep and chipped the puck in just before a diving Hendricks could make the save.
Both Hendricks and Dowling made 37 saves for their respective teams.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
