EDMONTON – In her first conference home game, rookie forward Hannah Olenyk had a pair of goals and a five-point night as the No.4 University of Alberta Pandas defeated the University Regina Cougars in a 7-1 decision, Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.

The Cochrane, Alta. native and linemates Deanna Morin and Jessica Kampjes combined for 12 points on the night and 21 in their last two games. Sophomore Morin had a goal and three assists while third-year Kampjes netted a goal and a pair of helpers. Alison Campbell, Ashley Morin, and Lindsey Cunningham also scored for the home team.

Third-year forward Kylie Gavelin scored midway through the third period for the Cougars, breaking Alberta netminder Lindsey Post's shutout streak at 179:40.

Former Edmonton Thunder Campbell opened the scoring for the Pandas at the 12:35 mark of the opening frame on the power-play when she moved in on goal from the high slot, her wristshot stopped by Regina 'keeper Jennifer Schmidt but Campbell backhanded in her rebound for her second on the season.

Just under three minutes later, Ashley Morin redirected an Olenyk pass up high while in front to double the Alberta lead.

An early man-advantage in the middle stanza got Cunningham on the board, cleaning up a rebound in front at 2:32, and Olenyk got her first of the night 63 seconds later on a fortunate bounce, the puck hopping up into the air where Schmidt lost sight of it just for a brief moment before the puck caromed off her defender and trickled into the near corner.

Long-time Regina head coach Sarah Hodges quickly changed goalies to Toni Ross to refocus the visitors, but another power-play opportunity late in the second period put Alberta up by five, Kampjes powering an Olenyk rebound through Ross with 3:47 left.

Linemate Deanna Morin scored her own tally 3:43 into the final frame, sharply deking out a returned Schmidt in the Cougar goal with a backhand to put the game away for good.

Regina broke Post's attempt at a third-straight shutout on their own man-advantage at the 9:39 mark, Gavelin taking a Kylee Kupper feed at the top of the circle before slapping it top shelf.

Olenyk added a one-timer redirect in front with 3:58 left on the clock to round out the scoring, netting her eight point in two games.

The Pandas finished the night at a perfect 3-3 on the power-play while the Cougars went 1-5.

The two squads meet tomorrow on Saturday in game two of the weekend series, puck drop at 2:00 p.m. MT.
