WBB: Second half lockdown lifts Dinos past Wesmen

CALGARY – A 26-point third quarter by the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team helped them overcome a halftime deficit and defeat the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 82-76 on Saturday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.

The scoring duo of Bobbi Jo Colburn and Brianna Ghali was electric for the Dinos, going up against the Canada West-leading scoring and reigning MVP Antoinette Miller. Colburn and Ghali combined to score 50 of Calgary's 82 points, while Miller was held to a season-low 16 points.

"Ultimately she is going to get some shots, she has an ability to score over people," explained Dinos head coach Damian Jennings when asked about Miller. "It takes an IQ to be able to recognize how to limit the best players but also not leave other people open. We did a good job of that in the second half."

Leading the offensive charge for the Wesmen was Faith Hezekiah, another one of the conference's top scorers, who finished with 21 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Apart from the scoring provided by Colburn and Ghali, the Dinos also got nine points each from Erin McIntosh and Shannon Hatch. A fifth-year guard, Hatch also tied Ghali with a team-leading eight rebounds.

With the win, the Dinos now have a 4-1 record in conference play, while the Wesmen fall to 2-3 on the campaign.

Despite the end result, things did not start out well for the Dinos. Coming off a disappointing finish in their last game against the UBC Thunderbirds, Calgary once again found themselves struggling to finish on the offensive end.

The Wesmen were able to jump out to an early lead, but by halftime, the Dinos had made it a five-point game.

"The game was very disappointing for about 25 minutes, we were very soft and tentative," noted Jennings. "The game plan was spot on, and when that was executed, we were able to keep a number of very talented players on Winnipeg [off the score sheet]."

Calgary dominated the third quarter with a series of small runs and outscored Winnipeg 26-17 during the frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Dinos locked it down, keeping the Wesmen to a game-low 16 points in the quarter.

The Dinos' defensive performance in the second half was highlighted by a strong game from Hilary Annich, who drew matchups against Miller.

"Hilary on Miller during certain stages of the second half helped ignite [the comeback]. She did a solid job," complimented Jennings.

Calgary and Winnipeg will meet again tomorrow afternoon as the Dinos host a 2 p.m. matinee at the Jack Simpson Gym.
