WolfPack Women’s Basketball Season Ends In Alberta

The season is over for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's basketball team.

The WolfPack were downed 62-56 by the host University of Alberta Pandas in the second game of their best of three Canada West quarter final at the Saville Centre on Friday (Mar 4).

The Pandas won the series in two straight games.

"I was really proud of our girls in how they competed after a tough loss last night," said WolfPack head coach Scott Reeves.  "There are some great people in our program and their character showed tonight."

The Wolfpack shot 35.6 per cent from the field in comparison to Alberta's 33.3 per cent.  But the Pandas were dominant at the free throw line (81.3 per cent to TRU's 60 per cent).

Alberta had a 16-13 lead after the first quarter but the 'Pack outgunned them 12-7 in the second quarter and led 25-23 at the half.

In fact, TRU outscored Alberta in the third quarter as well (21-20) and held a 46-43 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Alberta was led by Jessilyn Fairbanks with 31 points while Maddie Rogers chipped in with 18.

The top scorer for TRU was Kassie Colonna (4th year, forward, Invermere, BC) with 20 points.  Taiysa Worsfold (5th year, guard, Kamloops, BC) added 15 while Michelle Bos (2nd year, guard, Surrey, BC) chipped in with 12.

The loss was the last CIS game for Colonna, Worsfold and Sarah Malate (5th year, guard, Calgary, AB).

The WolfPack will lose one other player this season in fourth year guard Jenna Quinton (Calgary, AB). She suffered a career ending injury earlier this season.

TRU could have the rest of their roster return for 2016-17 and will add guard Cassandra Rerick (Prince George, BC). She 'red shirted' this season after transferring from UNBC.

Also joining the program will be 5'7" guard Julian Duong of Britannia Secondary in Vancouver, BC.
