KELOWNA, BC- The UFV Cascades defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday night in the UBC Okanagan gymnasium, by a final score of 90-44. UFV won both matches against UBC Okanagan this weekend, to improve their record to 9-7 on the season, while the Heat drop to 10-6.
UFV finished with five players scoring in double-digits. Kayli Sartori led the way for the Cascades, scoring 19 points, followed by Sydney Williams (18), Shayna Cameron (17), Taylor Claggett (14), and Katie Brink (10). UBC Okanagan's leading scorers on the night were Robyn Aulin-Haynes, who finished the game with eight points, and Emily Kanester and Emma Johnson, who each had seven.
The Cascades' Kayli Sartori, who finished with a double-double, also led in the assists category, with ten. Rebounding in the contest was also led by Sartori, and her two teammates Katie Brink, and Sydney Williams, who all finished the night with nine boards.
UBC Okanagan head coach Claire Meadows said after the game, "We got out-worked, we got out-hustled, we got pushed around. They came into our gym, and they made us look like we were far from prepared to play that basketball game."
After the first quarter, UBC Okanagan trailed UFV 26-11. The Cascades shot 57% from three-point range, making four of their seven attempts. Forward Shayna Litman and guard Sydney Williams made two apiece from long-range for the visitors. The Heat shot 29.4% in the opening quarter, making five of 17 shots.
At the end of the first half UFV led UBC Okanagan 51-21. The Cascades had three players in double-digits after 20 minutes of play. Sydney Williams, Kayli Sartori, and Shayna Cameron led the way for the visitors offensively, with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively at the half. The Heat's top scorers by half time were starting post Robyn Aulin-Haynes, with six points, and starting forward Jordan Korol, who had five.
After 20 minutes of play UFV was shooting 56.7% (46.7 3FG%), while UBC Okanagan was held to 23.3% (8.3 3FG% ). The Cascades led the half in assists, rebounds, and steals as well, totalling 12, 24, and six to the Heat's five, 14, and five in those categories respectively.
UFV led UBC Okanagan by 34 after three quarters, 71-37. Cascades forward Kayli Sartori led all scorers in the third quarter with six points. UFV shot 42.9% (39.1 3FG% ) in the quarter, to the Heat's 33.3% (33.3 3FG%). Heat starting guard Emily Kanester was her team's leading scorer in the frame, with five points on a three-pointer and two made free throws.
The fourth quarter saw the Cascades' Taylor Claggett and Kaitlyn McDonald, and the Heat's Emma Johnson lead the scoring with six points apiece. UFV shot 41.2% (37.5 3FG%)and held UBC Okanagan to 16.7% (0.0 3FG%).
Looking to her team's next pair of games, coach Meadows said, "We're focusing on Grant MacEwan next weekend, but it's evident after watching these last two games that we have to spend some time on our defence, which is too bad, because that's what we pride ourselves on."
UBC Okanagan will host MacEwan next weekend (Feb. 12 & 13), and UFV will host Thompson Rivers on those same nights. UFV's Friday night match next weekend (Feb. 12), will be a Shoot for the Cure event.
