WolfPack Women’s Basketball open 2016 With Loss

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's basketball team experienced something they have had in three years.  That was losing a Canada West regular season game to the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat.   The WolfPack dropped a 48-45 decision on Friday (Jan 8) at the "Furnace" in Kelowna.

The result drops the WolfPack's record to 6-3, the same as the Heat's. Both teams are now tied for second spot in the Canada West Explorer Division.

"We gave up too many offensive rebounds that were costly," said TRU head coach Scott Reeves. " The turnovers were converted for points and we shot the ball terribly. I give UBCO credit for battling hard all game."

UBCO scored 17 points off turnovers to the 'Pack's 8.  But TRU had 20 points 'in the paint' compared to the Heat's 8.

The Heat led 24-17 at the half.  TRU outscored UBCO 18-13 in the final quarter.

UBCO was led by Vanessa Butteselle with nine points. Kayla McFadden and Robyn Aulin-Haynes added seven while Claire Elliot had eight rebounds.

TRU got a 'double double' from Kassie Colonna (4th year, forward, Invermere, BC). She had 16 points and 18 rebounds (15 on defense). Lelani Carney (1st year, guard, Vancouver, BC) had eight points.

Jordan MacLean (3rd year, forward, Hinton, AB)  made her Canada West regular season debut in this game for the WolfPack. She had three points and 10 rebounds.

TRU will continue their road swing next weekend (Jan 15-16) in Edmonton against the Explorer Division leading MacEwan University Griffins (8-1).

The WolfPack play their first regular season game of the 2016 calendar year on Friday, January 22nd when they entertain the Mount Royal Cougars on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre. Tip off will be 6 pm.
