Cougars need massive fourth to stave off upset bid by Winnipeg

The Cougars (6-1) looked like they'd be on their way to a convincing win over a Winnipeg team that has only one Canada West win this season after opening up the game with three-pointers on each of their first three possessions, but the Wesmen had other ideas. They went on a 7-0 run late to take their first lead of the game late in the first, held a two-point lead at the halftime break, and led for the entire third quarter before Regina went on its big run in the fourth.

That 17-4 run for the Cougars in the fourth featured three three-pointers by Crone, two of which came in the span of 71 seconds – off of assists by Sidney Dobner – to put the Cougars in the lead for the first time since midway through the second quarter. The Cougars held on to that lead for the remainder of the game, sealing the win after a Kerri Kuzbyt three-point attempt that would have tied the game with seconds left was no good.

Crone finished with a career-high six three-pointers and a game-high 20 points while also pulling down eight rebounds for the Cougars. Katie Polischuk registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Charlotte Kot and Alyssia Kajati both finished with 12 points and seven boards.

Winnipeg's Megan Noonan played 39 of 40 minutes and had a team-high 18 points for the Wesmen, while Skylar Boulanger had 15 points and Faith Hezekiah had a strong effort off the bench with 11 points. Noonan and Boulanger tied for the team lead with six rebounds apiece.

Though Winnipeg shot 45.3% to Regina's 38.5% from the field, the Cougars held a 45-34 advantage on the boards. The turnover battle was close to even, with Regina losing the ball 22 times to Winnipeg's 20.

The Cougars can move into third place in Canada West's Pioneer Division with another win over Winnipeg tomorrow. The weekend series will close out on Saturday night, again with a 6:00 tip at the CKHS.
