Vikes sweep Pronghorns in convincing fashion

Lethbridge – For the second night in a row the Lethbridge Pronghorns fell behind early and were unable to recover as they dropped their second consecutive game to the Victoria Vikes, 85-55.

The loss keeps the 'Horns winless at 0-6, while the weekend sweep moves the Vikes to 3-5 and back into the mix in the Pioneer Division.

Zoe Dahl led all Pronghorn scorers with 12 points and freshman Katie Keith continues to be a bright spot for the 'Horns having another strong game with 10 points, five rounds, four assists and three steals. For the Vikes, Amira Giannattasio led the way with a game high 26 points, while for the second straight night Jenna Bugiardini finished with a double-double, contributing 18 points and 15 rebounds.

A night after falling behind big early, the Pronghorns did have a better opening quarter Saturday night but still found themselves down 11 (22-11) after 10 minutes. The 'Horns shot the ball at nearly a 40% clip after hitting just two field goals in the opening quarter last night.

The second quarter saw much of the same with the Vikes scoring another 23 points and holding a 45-28 lead at the break. Both teams finished the half with identical shooting percentages at 38.5% but the biggest difference between the two teams in the opening half was the ability of the Vikes to generate second chance points with 10 offensive rebounds and the 'Horns inability to take care of the ball, committing 16 turnovers to the Vikes six. On the strength of the offensive boards and forced turnovers, the Vikes attempted 13 more shots than the Pronghorns in the half.

While both teams cooled off substantially in the second half, the Vikes continued to pull away outscoring the 'Horns 20-14 in the third and 19-13 in the fourth to cruise to their second straight win.

On the night, the Vikes finished 34.2% from the field, including 11 from long range and out rebounded the 'Horns 50-36. The 'Horns were only seven for 28 from the field in the second half and finished the night five for 20 from behind the arc. They also committed 26 turnovers compared to the Vikes 11.

Both teams now head into the semester break and the 'Horns will open 2016 with two consecutive road weekends, before returning home to host the Manitoba Bisons, January 22nd and 23rd. The Vikes will open the New Year hosting the Bisons January 8th and 9th.
