Cascades pull away in fourth quarter to down Timberwolves

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - With a consistent effort from start to finish, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the UNBC Timberwolves 80-68 in Prince George on Friday.

Shayna Cameron paced the Cascades (3-2) with 21 points and six rebounds, while Kayli Sartori (17 points, eight rebounds, five assists) and Taylor Claggett (17 points, seven rebounds) also did significant damage for Fraser Valley, who have now defeated the Timberwolves in all nine head-to-head matchups since the 2012-13 season.

The Timberwolves got strong efforts from Maria Mongomo (23 points, 10 rebounds), Vasiliki Louka (10 points, six rebounds), and Preety Nijjar (nine points, seven rebounds), but it still wasn't enough to avoid a five-game losing streak to start the season.

Fraser Valley took control of the game early and never let it go, opening up a sizable advantage thanks to a 9-0 run in a 1:55 span early in the first quarter, eventually building up an 18-8 lead with 3:30 left in the frame.

At that point, Mongomo put the Timberwolves on her back, putting up seven points in less than two minutes to get back within striking distance, though the Cascades ended the quarter up 24-19.

The Cascades enjoyed a double-digit lead for the majority of the second quarter, jumping ahead thanks to another strong start to the frame. However, it was the Timberwolves who took a bit of momentum into halftime, as a late Kylie Pozniak three-pointer cut Fraser Valley's lead to 45-38 through 20 minutes.

Neither team gained much in the way of sustained offensive pressure in the third quarter, though the stalemate allowed the Cascades to hang on to a 58-50 lead.

Fraser Valley pulled away in the final frame, stretching the lead to as much as 19 in the final two minutes before the Timberwolves used free throws to cut the deficit as time expired.

The Cascades and Timberwolves will meet again tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the Northern Sport Centre, a game that will also be available on CanadaWest.TV.
