Griffins defeat Cougars, 88-46

Edmonton, AB….The MacEwan University Griffins women's basketball team improved to 2-0, in the young Canada West regular season, with a 88-46 victory of the visiting Mount Royal university Cougars.  The Cougars Canada West record falls to 0-2.

The Griffins came out strong and continued their dominance of the Cougars establishing an early lead and while Mount Royal kept pace for a five minute stretch late in the quarter, they trailed MacEwan University by eight after one.  

The Griffins opened the second with a ten point run to open up a double digit lead that kept growing outscoring the Cougars by 16 points in the second quarter, while holding Mount Royal to eight points. MacEwan University lead by 24 points at the break. 

The Griffins were led by Megan Wood, Edmonton, AB with 12 points as three different Griffins were in double figures at the half.   The Griffins shot 42% from the floor in the first half. 

MacEwan University out rebounded Mount Royal, 26 to 19, with Kelly Fagan, St. Albert, AB leading all Griffins with eight total rebounds.  The top scorer for Mount Royal, at the break, was Becky Nash, Pickering, ON with four points.  Nash also pulled down six rebounds. 

In the second half the Griffins continued their dominance of Mount Royal, out rebounding the Cougars at both ends of the court, building on the lead and keeping Mount Royal from any meaningful run to get back into the game. The Griffins shot 31% percent from the floor in the third quarter and led by 29 after three. 

In the fourth quarter, MacEwan University played excellent defense holding Mount Royal to 11 points.  The Griffins shot an amazing 59% in the final frame to secure their second 40 plus victory, 88-46. 

Wood and Kendall Lydon, Chehalis, WA both scored 17 points each to lead MacEwan University.  Fagan, a fifth year forward was the Griffins player of the game, adding 12 points, team high 13 total rebounds and recording four steals and blocks in the victory over Mount Royal.

The Cougars Yasmere Saghir, Calgary, AB who scored a team high 15 points coming off the bench.  

The Griffins travel to Abbotsford, BC next weekend to face the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday (November 13) and Saturday (November 14th, in Canada West regular season action.
