Wesmen Beat Cougars To End Regular Season

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed their 2014-2015 regular season schedule with an 80-73 victory over the University of Regina Cougars Saturday afternoon at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg extends their winning streak to eight and finish the regular season schedule with a record of 14-6, and a fourth place finish in the Pioneer Division standings. Regina completes the regular season with a 12-8 record currently tied for fifth in the Pioneer Division with Victoria.

Samantha Donald led the Wesmen with 22 points, including four-three pointers. Megan Noonan finished with 20, with four-three pointers. Kerri Kuzbyt added 14 and Stephanie Kleysen in her final home game as a Wesmen added 12 points.

Charlotte Kot led the Cougars with 18 points. Alyssia Kajati had a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Polischuk and Caitlin Zacharias each added 10.

Winnipeg gained the advantage in the early stages of the opening period. The Wesmen went on a 11-0 run to open up a 17-6 lead just past the midway point of the quarter. The Wesmen did not let up and held a 21-11 lead after 10 minutes. Winnipeg continued to hold a double-digit lead for a good part of the second quarter until the Cougars came on late. Regina scored six straight points before the halftime break to cut the Wesmen lead to 41-34.

Katie Polischuk drained a three-pointer on the Cougar's opening possession of the second half to cut the Wesmen lead to 41-37. Winnipeg responded and relied on three pointers by Megan Noonan and Kerri Kuzbyt to push the league back to double digits at 58-46. Regina scored four points before the end of the quarter to trail 58-50 after three quarters.

Regina came on strong in the fourth quarter, running off nine straight points to take their first lead of the game at 59-58. Winnipeg went on a brief run of their own to open up some breathing space at 65-61 and held sealed the win draining their free throws in the final minute to clinch the 80-73 victory.
