GRIFFINS PICK UP 78-55 WIN OVER MOUNT ROYAL

Calgary — The MacEwan University Griffins picked up a 78-55 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars thanks to dominant performances from their two leading scorers and a two double-doubles.

 

Behind the strength of four three-pointers by four different players, Mount Royal was able to keep pace with the second-place Griffins in the first quarter. Jayla Verney and Desiree Oakley, the team's leading scorers, led the Cougars with six and five points, respectively. Kelly Fagan added six points for the Griffins, who led 23-22 at the end of one.

 

The more-experienced Griffins pulled away in the fourth quarter by finishing on a 19-6 run. Kendall Lyon hit two threes and led MacEwan with eight points, while Fagan again scored six, including a layup just before the halftime buzzer. The Griffins led 45-32 at half.

 

The top scorers for both Mount Royal and MacEwan went head-to-head in the third quarter, as both Verney and Megan Wood scored nine points. The Griffins' strong play continued as they held a 65-49 lead.

 

Lydon continued her hot night as she scored seven points and pushed the Griffins to a victory. The fourth quarter was quite low-scoring, as the teams combined for only 19 points.

 

Fagan finished with a double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, plus two blocks. She now sits just four blocks away from tying the Canada West single-season record with one game left to play. Lydon shot 8-11 from the field and had 21 points, while Wood had 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Verney's strong rookie season continued as she recorded 17 points, while Angela Driscoll had 11 points, including seven from the free-throw line.

 

Mount Royal's season concludes tomorrow evening against the same Griffins in a 5 p.m. start at Kenyon Court. The Cougars sit at 6-13 while the Griffins improve to 15-4.
