Griffins say goodbye to Kubinic with victory over Heat on Senior Night

In their final home game of the season the MacEwan University Griffins women's basketball team defeated the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat 77-61 Saturday night at City Center Gymnasium.

 

The Griffins opened the game on a 14-2 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Kendall Lydon. A couple of fast break baskets brought the Heat back into striking distance as the Griffins finished the opener with a 16-10 lead.

 

Both teams struggled to sustain runs in the second half as they traded baskets. Claire Elliot picked up five points to pace the Heat. Megan Wood went 4-5 from the field in the second quarter for eight points as the Griffins took a 34-26 halftime lead.

 

Wood hit the first two shots of the second half as the Griffins opened up a 12-point lead. The Heat continued to score by committee as Sarah Allison led the way with four points, her team continued to struggle to put runs together. The Griffins took a 51-39 lead into the final quarter.

 

The Heat were never able to cut the Griffins lead to single digits as Lydon put up 11 points down the stretch to seal the game for the Griffins.

 

Lydon finished with a game-high 25 points and added nine rebounds to be named the Griffins player of the game. Angela White scored 11 to earn the honours for the Heat.   

 

Both teams will conclude their regular season next weekend. The Griffins will head to Calgary for a pair of games against the Mount Royal Cougars with the first game scheduled for Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.

 

The Heat will return home to host the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves with action getting underway Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
