Brink and Wierks tag team in Cascades win over Timberwolves

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - Brink and Wierks tag team in the University of Fraser Valley's 88-75 defeat of the UNBC Timberwolves Friday night. The Cascades move to 10-7 while the Timberwolves fall to 2-15 on the season.

Kaitlyn Brink (Abbotsford, BC) netted a team high of 28 points on the night, going 12-15 from the foul line. Sarah Weirks (Chilliwack, BC) added a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds to her team's victory.

Rookie guard Hannah Pudlas (Prince George, BC) went 4-5 to lead the Timberwolves with 14 points off the bench. Scoring was spread amongst the starters with Jasprit Nijjar (Vancouver, BC) putting up 11 points and seven rebounds, while Vasiliki Louka (Athens, GRE) and Sarah Robin (Prince Rupert, BC) chipped in 12 and 11 respectively.

The first half saw a run and gun game from the Cascades. Brink led her team with 13 points in the first quarter alone, a perfect 4-4 from the field. The Timberwovles struggled to keep pace trailing 26-13 heading into the second.

The Timberwolves found their groove in the second quarter with a 7-0 run, after putting pressure on the Cascades' offence. Robin and Nijjar were big for the Timberwolves each netting seven points in the second. Even with the Timberwolves offensive push the Cascades were able to stay ahead thanks to the efforts of Brink, with 20 points at half, and Weirks who neared a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds. At the break the UFV Cascades led 49-33 over the Timberwolves.

The third quarter saw much of the same as the Cascades controlled the play as UNBC battled to keep pace. The fourth quarter is where the Timberwolves finally found their stride. Pudlas was instrumental in UNBC outscoring the Cascades 23-15 in the final 10 minutes but their fourth quarter push was not enough to overcome UFV's lead. At the end of the game the Cascades came out on top 88-75 over the Timberwolves.

Both the UFV Cascades and the UNBC Timberwolves will return tomorrow night for a rematch. The game is set to tip off at 5 p.m. PST and can be viewed live at canadawest.tv
