STRONG TEAM EFFORT LEADS MRU OVER THE CASCADES

Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars beat the third place team from Fraser Valley 79-72 in the overtime on Saturday night at Kenyon court. With a physical game the Cougars came on top as Desiree Oakley led the Cougars with 30 points. Her teammate Jayla Verney had 20 points.

Hot off the start, Desiree Oakley scored 11 points to start of the game, but that wasn't enough going to stop UFV scorers Celeste Dyck and Kaitlyn Brink who dropped ten consecutive points each for them. The Cascades led 21-20 after one quarter of play.

In the second, the Cougars got out to a 17-15 lead. Desiree Oakley led the Cougars scoring another nine points, while Cascades Sarah Wierks finished off the first half with 15 rebounds for the team.

The Cascades dominated the Cougars in the second half outscoring them 23-9. Sarah Wierks came had nine points for the Cascades.

The Cougars brought it back the fourth. The Cougars scored 22 points while the Cascades kept it close with nine in the quarter. The Cougars had a chance to win it with three seconds left but Jayla Verney's three-pointer clanked the rim.

Tied at 68-68 the overtime period was all MRU. The Cougars trapped and pressured the Cascades at every turn forcing countless turnovers.  

When Desire Oakley fouled out Jayla Verney picked up the slack dominating the Cascades ball handlers. The Cougars steamrolled UFV in overtime winning the game 79-72.

With the win MRU improves to 6-9, while UFV drops to 8-7.

Both teams will return tomorrow afternoon to Kenyon Court for round two of their series at 3pm.
