COUGARS CLOSE IN ON .500 WITH 69-46 WIN OVER UNBC

Calgary — A massive 25-point quarter by the Mount Royal University Cougars women's basketball team was more the fuel to push the team to a 69-46 win over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves Friday night.

 

A career-high 20 points by guard Desiree Oakley pushed the Cougars to victory, who led for the majority of the game.

 

The Timberwolves came out hungry, racing out to a 7-0 lead behind five quick points from Kylie Pozniak. However, Desiree Oakley and the Cougars stormed back on an 18-5 run, with Oakley recording nine points in the quarter. Mount Royal led 18-12 after one quarter. Pozniak and Sarah Robin lead UNBC with five each.

 

Oakley's strong game continued in the second quarter as she poured in seven more points. The Cougars outscored the Timberwolves 14-8 and led 32-20 at the break. Jayla Verney added five points for Mount Royal.

 

UNBC fought hard to draw closer and it was evident in the third. Robin and Jasprit Nijjar both added four points and pushed hard at the end to close the deficit to just eight at 44-36.

 

In the fourth quarter, Mount Royal took over and were simply dominant, they started on a 20-4 run and were able to put the game out of reach. The quarter featured scoring by committee for Mount Royal, as Drew Knox (5), Candice Duckett (4) and Yasmene Saghir (4) chipped in where needed.

 

Every Mount Royal player scored in the contest with Oakley leading the way with 20 points and Saghir adding 11. On UNBC, Pozniak lead the team with 12, while Robin had 11.

 

The Cougars are now 5-8, while UNBC falls to 1-12. Tomorrow night, the teams rematch at Kenyon Court, starting at 6 p.m.
