Griffins impress Whiteout crowd with dominant win over UFV

With a large crowd in attendance for the annual White Out game the MacEwan University Griffins gave the fans plenty to cheer for as they defeated the University of Fraser Valley Cascades 90-59 Friday night at City Center Gymnasium.

Kendall Lydon spurred a 15-5 start for the Griffins. Lydon finished the first quarter with nine points as the Griffins took a 25-13 lead. The Griffins held a decisive 10-4 edge in rebounds after the first quarter.

An impressive 9-0 run to start the second quarter gave the Griffins a 21 point lead. The Cascades fought back on the strength of Sarah Wierks who finished the first half with 13 points as the lead was cut to 44-30 at halftime.

Coming out of the ceremonial half time, the Griffins continued to dominate the early minutes of a quarter with a 12-2 run to start the third quarter. Wierks continued to create problems for the Griffins defence as she poured in another seven points. Unfortunately for the Cascades the rest of the team could only muster two points in the third quarter as the fell behind 70-39.

The Cascades were unable to mount much of a comeback in the fourth quarter as the Griffins continued to play at a high level on both sides of the ball.

Teams will regroup and return for the second game of the series scheduled for Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.
