Griffs overcome slow start to sweep Timberwolves

The MacEwan University Griffins continued their impressive debut season in Canada West winning 69-53 over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves on Saturday evening at City Center Gymnasium.

Both teams stumbled out of the gate shooting cold but it was the Griffins who built the 9-8 lead after the first quarter. Kylie Pozniak led all scorers with four first quarter points for the Timberwolves.

In the second the Griffins found their scoring touch, pouring in 27 points to expand their lead to 13 going into the half. Vasiliki Louka paced the 'Wolves with eight first half points. The Griffins began heating up from the three-point line hitting five of eight, including three from Kendall Lydon.

Coming out of the half the Griffins continued to display their stifling defense, limiting the Timberwolves to just seven points. The Griffins continued to pad their lead with a balanced attack resulting in 13 bench points in the third quarter as they took a 56-30 lead into the final fame.

Refusing to back down the Timberwolves cut into the Griffins lead in the fourth, but it was too late as the Griffins held on for the 69-53 win.

Kari Kubinec was solid from the outset for the Griffins early on and finished with a game-high 13 points to earn player of the game honours. Hannah Pudlas finished with seven points, three rebounds and two assists as part of a great two way performance to earn the honours for the 'Wolves.

Up next for the Griffins is a home series on "White Out" night where they take on the University of Fraser Valley Cascades. Friday's tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. with a series of championship banner raisings to take place at half time of the women's game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative white out rally towel.

The Timberwolves will return home to host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack beginning Friday night at 5:00 p.m.
