Van Ginhoven drives Pandas to victory

EDMONTON - Gearing up to her fourth double-double of the season, senior forward Saskia van Ginhoven stepped on the gas in the first half to pave the way to victory for the NO.2 University of Alberta Pandas, taking a 65-33 decision over the Calgary Dinos, Friday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

The Edmonton native recorded a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds while senior guard Sally Hillier came second in scoring with nine points and fifth-year forward Kendra Asleson finished just short of a double-double with eight points and nine boards.

Heading a Calgary squad that struggled at 18.9% in the field, British import Kristie Sheils netted seven points for the visitors while Alberta-born Kelsey Lund had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Pandas, improving to 8-1 on the season, also out-rebounded the opposition 55-31 in the game, the Dinos dropping to 6-5 to end the 2014 half of their season.

Van Ginhoven opened the scoring for the third-best offence in the country with a layup in the first minute, notching her 800th point in career conference play, and following it with three of Alberta's next four buckets to open up a 10-3 lead.

Another 8-1 run inflated the lead to 18-4 before the Dinos were able to counter but the Calgary squad could only cut the lead down to seven before the Pandas responded with a 15-2 run that carried halfway through the second quarter, highlighted by an Asleson layup off the glass.

Alberta held the Dinos to only nine shots in the quarter, giving the home team ample opportunity to increase their lead, heading into the locker rooms with a 36-17 lead.

With five of the first six points of the second half going to the Pandas, including an end-to-end layup by fourth-year guard Jessilyn Fairbanks, things only looked worse for the visitors but some foul trouble by Alberta gave the Dinos some hope, connecting on a convenient 7-11 from the charity stripe, despite still having trouble in the field.

Unfortunately, their shooting turned ice cold in the final quarter, hitting only one bucket in 15 attempts and succeeding on just one of four free throws.

The Pandas, content to maintain ball control, scored half of their 15 fourth-quarter points from the bench, sophomore forward Elle Hendershot netting the last three points in the final minutes to end the game.

Alberta will start the 2015 half of their season on the road against the Winnipeg Wesmen on January 9-10 while Calgary waits until the following weekend to get back into action, heading to Lethbridge to square off against the Pronghorns.
