T-Birds Edge Wesmen To Even Weekend Series

The No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds salvaged a weekend split after posting a 50-48 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg won the opening game on Friday by a 69-62 margin. UBC with the win improves to .500 with a record of 3-3. Winnipeg's record goes to 5-3.

UBC was led by Harleen Sidhu's double-double consisting of 14 points and 15 rebounds. Kris Young and Adrienne Parkin each added 11 points.

Skylar Boulanger finished with a double-double of her own for the Wesmen, consisting of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Stephanie Kleysen also figured in double-digits finishing with 12.

The T-Birds held the lead for a majority of the opening quarter and held a slim 12-11 lead with 1:25 left in the opening frame. A Kleysen steal and basket gave the Wesmen their first lead but four straight points by the T-Birds gave them a 16-13 lead after the opening quarter.

UBC maintained their lead and extended it by as much as six points at 27-21. Skylar Boulanger scored back-to-back baskets to tie the score at 27-27. UBC went into the halftime break with a 28-27 lead.

The third quarter was another low-scoring frame. UBC held a 38-35 lead late in the quarter but a pair of free throws by Kerri Kuzbyt followed by a two-pointer by Kleysen gave the Wesmen a 39-38 lead after thirty minutes.

UBC relied on a few runs in the fourth quarter, including a 8-2 run that gave them a 48-43 lead late in the quarter. A Kris Young bucket extended the UBC lead to 50-45 but Winnipeg responded with a three pointer by Samantha Donald to cut the lead to 50-48 with 1:15 left. A UBC giveaway with 21 seconds left gave the Wesmen time to tie or take the lead but a critical giveaway closed it out for the T-Birds.

UBC will be home to the Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend. Winnipeg will have a bye in their schedule and will next see action after the holiday break on January 9-10 hosting Alberta.
