KELOWNA, BC - After a sensational opening game that went in overtime in favour of the home team, UBC Okanagan once again played hosts to MacEwan University as the Griffins came out victorious in a game that ended 78-52 to the away side on Saturday night in Kelowna.
The Heat side started slowly, not being able to find the basket until Sarah Allison hit a three with just 1:39 left in the first quarter to make the score 11-3. MacEwan took the first quarter 17-5 and carried that momentum through to the end of the first half, as the first half ended with the score at 34-12 to the away side.
The third quarter however saw a rejuvenated Heat line-up that began to show hopes of recovery, mostly because of first year point guard Vanessa Botteselle who came off the bench and got 11 points and along with four steals as she was the leader point getter for UBC Okanagan in just 15 minutes of court time.
The Griffins however were in no mood to give Botteselle her way, coming out comfortably on top in at the end of regulation, 78-52.
Third year guard Jessica Jazdarehee, gave Botteselle good support contributing with 10 points and five rebounds but like her UBC Okanagan counterparts struggled from the field going 3-11. UBC Okanagan as a team was 17-70 (24.3%) from the field on the day compared to the previous night's field goal conversion of 31-71 (35.5%).
The Griffins on the other side once again relied on star player Megan Wood for her 25 points and seven rebounds as she was once again out there to torment the UBC Okanagan defence. Wood was well supported by Kelly Fagan who got 11 points herself along with a game-best 17 rebounds as well as Kelly O'Hallahan who got 11 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
The Griffins scored 31-67 (46.3%) field goals compared to the previous night's tally of 27-76 (35.5%), scoring at a brisker pace than the Heat. The Griffins got 3-10 (30%) from the three point line compared to last night's 1-16 (6.2%).
The Heat now have a record of 2-4 while the Griffins now go into their next game with a record of 4-2.
UBC Okanagan will next travel to UNBC in a game scheduled on Friday, the 28th of November at 6 p.m. (PST) in Prince George and the Griffins will travel to University of Fraser Valley in a game scheduled to begin on Friday, November 28th at 6 p.m. (PST).
