Griffins use defence to tame 'Pack

Defense was the name of the game for the MacEwan University Griffins as they picked up a 58-53 victory over the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Friday evening at City Center Gymnasium.

With both teams playing impressive defense in the early stages, it was the Griffins who took the early lead 13-12 at the end of the first quarter. Kendall Lydon and Kari Kubinec paced the Griffins with five points, while Tailysa Worsfold led the all scorers and the 'Pack with six.

The defensive battle continued in the second quarter as the Wolfpack limited the home team to just eight points, taking a 27-21 lead into the half. The Griffins were unable to contain Kassie Colonna down low as she poured in 13 points in the first half.

Starting strong in the third quarter the 'Pack scored the first seven points, leaving the Griffins searching for an answer. They would find one, courtesy of their strong defensive play battling back with a 9-0 run, trimming the Wolfpack's lead to 42-38.

In the final quarter the Griffins kept their momentum moving forward as they turned their defensive play into points on the board, with an 11-0 run to retake the lead. The Wolfpack kept things close, but were unable to recapture the advantage as the Griffins held on for the victory.

Kelly O'Hallahan finished the game with 14 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and five steals to be named the Griffins player of the game. The Wolfpack's award went to Colonna who was instrumental in directing their offense and finished with a game-high 21 points.

The Wolfpack and Griffins will commence their rematch Saturday, with tip off slated for 5:00 p.m. at City Center Gymnasium.
