Cougars complete weekend sweep over Manitoba

The University of Regina's women's basketball team made it two wins in as many nights over the Manitoba Bisons with a 91-55 victory on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The win improves Regina's record to 2-2 on the season as the Cougars pull into a five-way tie for fourth place in the early Pioneer Division standings.

Kehlsie Crone (pictured) and Alyssia Kajati both led the Cougars with 18 points, with Kajati pulling down nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double. Crone led all players with five assists and matched her career high with four three-pointers, ending up 4-for-5 from downtown in the win.

The Cougars had big contributions off the bench from both Jennilea Coppola and rookie Christina McCusker. Coppola had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while McCusker had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Manitoba (0-4) was led by 10 points from Samantha Pyke, while Sheree Carmona-Galdamez chipped in with nine.

The Cougars took control of this one early, reeling off a massive 26-4 run over the last seven minutes of the first quarter and the first half of the second. They took a 48-25 lead into halftime and never led by less than 20 the rest of the way, cruising to their second Canada West win of the season.

Regina shot 47.2% from the field in the win, including 44.4% from three-point range as the Cougars hit eight of their 18 attempts from downtown led by Crone's hot shooting from the outside. They also held a 59-30 rebounding advantage over Manitoba.

The Cougars will host Calgary (2-2) next weekend at the CKHS, while Manitoba plays host to Brandon (0-4).
