Wesmen Complete Weekend Sweep Over Dinos

The hometown University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a season opening weekend sweep over the University of Calgary Dinos after a 71-57 victory Saturday afternoon at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg (2-0), defeated Calgary (0-2) 63-49 in the series opener Friday night.

Third year guard Megan Noonan led the Wesmen with a game high 17 points. Fifth year guard Stephanie Kleysen added 15 points to go along with her game high nine rebounds.

Calgary was led by second year guard Brianna Ghali's 13 points. Kristie Shiels was next with nine. Jessica Thielen led the team in rebounds with eight.

In almost a carbon copy to yesterday's game, Winnipeg's strong first quarter was the difference. The Wesmen with strong outside shooting built a 20-9 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Calgary started to chip away at the start of the second quarter. A three-pointer by Clarisse Jennings was part of a 5-0 run that cut that Wesmen lead to 20-14. The Wesmen responded going on a 8-2 run to lead by double-digits at 28-16. Megan Noonan scored five points down the stretch to carry a 39-26 lead into halftime.

Winnipeg carried a double-digit lead for the opening six minutes of the third quarter. A three-pointer by Jessica Thielen followed by another two pointer cut the Wesmen lead to 47-38. Noonan stepped up with another three pointer to carry Winnipeg to a 53-40 lead after three quarters.

Winnipeg maintained their double-digit lead in the fourth quarter outscoring the Dinos 18-17 to make the final score 71-57.

Winnipeg will head to Lethbridge for games next Friday and Saturday. Calgary will play at home against the Brandon Bobcats.
