ABBOTSFORD, BC - The sixth-ranked nationally UFV Cascades women's basketball team dominated the UBC Thunderbirds tonight to take the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 71-43.

The win evens both teams' records at 7-3, and once again places them in a tie for first in the Pacific Division.

UBC was led by guard Jaime Hill with 10 points, and Harleen Sidhu with 8 points and 8 rebounds. The Cascades were led by forward Sarah Wierks, with 22 points and 13 rebounds, as well as a 16 point game from Nataliia Gavryliuk.

The Cascades won't take the court again until after the break, when they will face Winnipeg on January 10 in Manitoba.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Riding a 29-point opening quarter, the Regina Cougars completed the weekend sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 79-65 victory on Saturday night to close out the first semester of the 2013-2014 Canada West season.
 
With the win the Cougars improve to 7-2 on the season, while the ‘Horns suffer their third consecutive loss and fall to 3-7.
 
Aided by 11 first quarter points, Nicole Clarke led the Cougars with 24 points, while Kehlsie Crone had 15 and Charlotte Kot and Kaite Polischuk contributed with 12 and 11 points respectively in the win.

For the ‘Horns, Kim Veldman matched Clarke's 24 to lead her team.  Ali Cameron scored 13 points and Mariah Miller scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

Both teams will now be off until the New Year; the ‘Horns will return to action January 9th and 11th, traveling to face the Mount Royal Cougars and UNBC Timberwolves. The Cougars will also return during the second week of January and host Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan, January 9th and 10th.

EDMONTON - Senior forward Andria Carlyon earned her second-straight double-double, netting 22 points and 17 boards, as the CIS #3 of Alberta Pandas took their seventh-straight win with a 70-53 decision over the Winnipeg Wesmen, Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

The Dapp, Alta. native put up 15 points in the second half alone, teammates Renee Byrne and Maddie Rogers cracking the double-digit barrier with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Four players did the deed for the Wesmen, guards Megan Noonan (sophomore) and Stephanie Kleysen (fourth-year) getting 14 points apiece while sophomore guard Kerri Kuzbyt and senior forward Alyssa Grant added 10 points each.

Alberta improves their record to 8-2 on the season. With the loss, Winnipeg drops to 4-6.

Alberta starts the second half on the road, heading west to face off against the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes, while the Wesmen will spend that same weekend hosting the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans.

SASKATOON - Dalyce Emmerson scored 23 points and ripped down 16 rebounds to lead the CIS #4 Saskatchewan Huskies to a 68-58 win on Saturday night over the visiting Manitoba Bisons at the PAC.
 
Emmerson shot 8-for-10 from the field on her way to recording a double-double. The Prince Albert, Sask. native also had three rebounds and three assists in the game.
 
Saskatchewan improves to 9-1 with the weekend sweep over the Bisons, while Manitoba drops to 3-7 on the season. The Huskies won Friday night's contest 78-67 in overtime.
 
Selena Carmona-Galdamez scored 11 points to lead the way offensively for the Bisons. Robyn Eyer and Stephanie Gill each added nine points.
 
Both teams return to Canada West action January 10-11. Saskatchewan travels west to take on the Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds. Manitoba will host the Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades.

LANGLEY, BC – The Trinity Western Spartans team once again was step for step with visiting Victoria, but similar to Friday's contest, the Vikes pulled away over the final 10 minutes to earn a 65-58 win Saturday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre.
 
Victoria (7-3) possessed a nine-point halftime lead, but the Spartans (1-9) third quarter put the game back in the balance.
 
For the Spartans, it was Holly Strom leading the way with 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Luca Schmidt added nine points.
 
The Vikes were led by the three-pronged attack of Cassandra Goodis, Jessica Renfrew and Jenna Bugiardini, who each hit double-digits in points. Goodis led the team with 15 points while also collecting a game-high 11 rebounds while Renfrew had 12 points and Bugiardini added 10 points. Sarah Semeniuk had eight boards, seven points and four steals.
 
The Spartans will resume their Canada West schedule Jan. 10-11 when they will host Manitoba and Winnipeg at the LEC. Trinity Western will host a pair of exhibition games over the Christmas break as it will play Simon Fraser Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. and Thompson Rivers Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.
 
Victoria will be back on the court for regular season action Jan. 10-11 when it will host Saskatchewan Friday and Alberta Saturday.

Cougars-WolfPack Stats

KAMLOOPS, BC - The Thompson Rivers WolfPack enter the holidays in sole possession of fourth place in the Division.

The WolfPack improved their record to 6-4 after sweeping the Mount Royal Cougars on home court this weekend, 68-51 on Saturday at the Tournament Capital Centre.

With the loss, Mount Royal falls to 1-9 and sits ilast in the the Pacific Division.

Jorri Duxbury a team-high 15 boards  in the contest and added 12 points. Taiysa Worsfold led the way with 21 points, going 7-18 for field goals and was 5-13 from beyond the arc.

Mount Royal had two players in double figures as Alicia Tan had 16 points, while Carrie Campbell added 12.

The WolfPack don't return to Canada West play until Thursday January 9, 2014 when they visit the Cougars in Regina.  Mount Royal plays the same night at home against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

KELOWNA, BC - Out to try and sweep their first weekend of play this season, the UBC Okanagan Heat hosted the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night for the second of back-to-back games at UBC's Okanagan campus, with the Wolves evening the series after a 79-72 victory over the Heat.
 
UBCO's Mercedes VanKoughnett nearly had a double-double last night, missing only one assist, and  was approaching a triple-double with nine rebounds and seven assists.
 
The Heat are now 2-8 at the end of the 2013 year. The Wolves, meanwhile, improve to 4-6.

The next Heat basketball action will be January 9th at Regina.

EDMONTON - The CIS #3 Alberta Pandas out-rebounded the Winnipeg Wesmen by a little more than a 2-1 ratio, and in the process rolled to an 80-55 victory on Friday at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
 
Fifth-year Kelly Lyons, a former Carleton Raven, led all players on the night with 13, while Andria Carlyon had 10 rebounds to go along with her team leading 14 points. Saskia Van Ginhoven added 11 points and three assists in the win, while guard Jamie Norum had her biggest output of the season, banking 10 points.
 
For Winnipeg, Megan Noonan was lights out as she drained a game high 26 points, thanks in large part to five treys, and a 9-11 mark from the charity stripe. Guard Stephanie Kleysen added seven points and four assists in the loss.
 
The loss drops the Wesmen to 4-5, while Alberta wins their sixth straight game and sees their record improve to 7-2.
 
The two teams will play again on Saturday night, with tip off going at 5:00 pm MT.

SASKATOON - The CIS #4 Saskatchewan Huskies outscored the visiting Manitoba Bisons 17-6 in a five minute overtime period to win 87-76 on Friday at the PAC.

Kiera Lyons scored 10 of her 21 points in the extra frame to help Saskatchewan to the win. The Huskies started overtime on a 9-0 run before Manitoba scored with 1:06 remaining.

Saskatchewan improves to a conference best 8-1 with the win. Manitoba (3-6) suffers its fifth straight loss.  

Dalyce Emmerson scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Huskies. The Canada West blocks leader added three more to her season total while grabbing nine rebounds. Kabree Howard recorded five assists and nine points.

Sheree Carmona-Galdamez was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and finished the night with a team-high 18 points for Manitoba. Alison Balasko and Robyn Eyer scored 14 each with Balasko recording a team-high seven rebounds.

The two teams meet again Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at the PAC. The game can be viewed live at canadawest.tv.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – While the Lethbridge Pronghorns put up a valiant effort in the first half, they were no match for the CIS #5 Regina Cougars, falling 81-52 in the first game of the final weekend series of the first semester.
 
With the win the Cougars move to 7-2, for third place in the Prairie Division. The loss drops the ‘Horns to 3-6 on the season.
 
Katie Polischuck led the Cougars, coming off the bench to score 22 points, while Nicole Clarke chipped in with 16 and also, coming off the bench, Megan Chamberlin registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For the ‘Horns, Kim Veldman hit 13 of 15 free throws on her way to leading all scorers with 24 points, while Ali Cameron chipped in with 12 points.

ABBOTSFORD, BC -  The UFV Cascades (6-3) succumbed to the UBC Thunderbirds (7-2) by a score of 56-54 on friday at the Envision Athletic Centre in a closely contested battle for first place in the Pacific Division.

With the loss, the #6 Cascades extend their slide to three, while UBC extends their own streak to three wins..

Cascades Sarah Wierks (10 points), Kayli Sartori (13 points) and Nicole Wierks (14 points) all scored into double-digits. UBC's Harleen Sidhu registered a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds on the night.

UFV and UBC will meet again on Saturday, 5:00 p.m. at the EAC.

Victoria 73 Trinity Western 66

Vikes-Spartans Stats

LANGLEY, BC – The Trinity Western Spartans hung with Victoria for much of Friday's contest, but a 9-0 mid-fourth quarter run from the Vikes proved to be the difference as the Spartans lost 73-66 at the Langley Events Centre.
 
With just over five minutes left in the final frame, the Vikes turned a 53-52 lead into a 62-52 advantage in less than two minutes and from there TWU never got closer than five points. Victoria's Jenna Bugiardini dropped a 3-pointer to make it 56-52 and then added an in-tight put back to spark the game-deciding run.
 
The loss drops TWU to 1-8 while the win improves the Vikes to 5-3.
 
The Spartans Holly Strom tied her career-high in points with 31 and had a team-high seven rebounds. Janelle Traberadded 10 points.
 
For Victoria, Bugiardini had a team-high 25 points while Jessica Renfrew added 12 points. Sarah Semeniuk had a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
The teams will play the rematch on Saturday, 3:30 p.m. at LEC.

CALGARY - The Calgary Dinos dominated the Brandon Bobcats at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium when they defeated the visitors 73-53 on Friday.

The Dinos now improve to 8-2, having won eight straight to end the first half of the season. The Bobcats drop to 2-8.

Four Dinos hit double digits on the night, including Ashley Hirons who had a team-high 15 points, all coming from three pointers. Point guard Kristie Sheils scored another 14 for Calgary.

Once again, Cassie Cooke took control for the Bobcats as she scored a game-high 29 points, scoring more than half of Brandon's points in the game all on her own. Teammate Stephanie Haynes grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to match Saunders.

In the new year, the Dinos will face the UNBC Timberwolves on January 9th and then head back to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars., The Bobcats will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and the UBC Okanagan Heat.

KAMLOOPS, BC - The Thompson Rivers WolfPack opened up the final weekend of the 2013 portion of the season with a 70-63 victory over the visiting Mount Royal Cougars at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday.

The victory raised TRU's record to 5-4 while Mount Royal falls to 1-8.

Jorri Duxbury had 25 points and nine rebounds along with four blocks and two steals. Taiysa Worsfold scored 19 points.

Mount Royal had three players in double digits. Jordan McLean had 14 points. Carrie Campbell chipped in 1ith 12 while Angela Driscoll added 13 points.

The two teams play again at the TCC on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Timberwolves-Heat Stats

KELOWNA, BC - The second-half would make all the difference for the UBC Okanagan Heat, which found ways to gel on the offence and managed to pull away late in the fourth against the visiting UNBC Timberwolves for a 77-72 win.
 
Emily Kanester led the charge for the Heat, the wily three-year veteran netting a team-high 18 points including a dagger three ball in final minute of play that created a gap the Wolves could not cover. Sarah Allison leading with five. Allison also put up 15 points on 5-10 shooting, including another clutch 3-ball a mere minute before Kanester's to make it 70-66.
 
The Wolves' Mercedes VanKoughnett led all scorers with 20 points and had a near double-double with nine assists. Excellent guard play from both her and fellow fifth-year guard Jen Bruce amounted to 13 total assists en-route to the team's total of 17.
 
The Heat improve to 2-7 on the season, with their last game of the semester taking place tomorrow against the now 3-6 Timberwolves. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. Catch the game live on www.canadawest.tv.

Bobcats-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – Fifth-year Tamara Jarrett scored 15 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning bucket with six seconds to play as the Calgary Dinos upended the Brandon Bobcats 66-64 on Thursday in the Jack Simpson Gym.
 
The victory was the seventh straight for the Dinos, which improve to 7-2 and move temporarily into a tie for first place in the Prairie Division. Brandon falls to 2-7 with the loss, which snapped the Bobcats' modest two-game win streak.
 
To gain the victory, the Dinos had to overcome a sparkling 39-point performance by reigning CIS female athlete of the week Cassie Cooke, who posted her second 39-point game in as many outings. Cooke tied a Canada West record with nine three-point hoops in the contest.
 
Jarrett scored seven points in the final minute and the final dozen for the Dinos overall. Cooke's ninth trey of the evening put the visitors up 62-59 with 90 seconds left, but Jarrett scored five in a row to give Calgary a two-point lead, then responded to a Cooke lay-up with one of her own in the final seconds to give Calgary the 66-64 victory.
 
Kaela Cranston was the only other Bobcat in double-digits with 11 points on the night. For the Dinos, Kristie Sheils added a dozen points.
 
The teams wrap up their weekend series Fridaym with tip-off at 6 p.m., live on CanadaWest.tv.
