VANCOUVER - The #10 UBC Thunderbirds improved to 15-5 on the season with a 68-55 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat at War Memorial Gym.

Saturday's win marked the 'Birds eighth straight victory as Harleen Sidhu and Kris Young once again paced UBC with 21 and 20 points respectively.

Sarah Allison and Claire Elliott had 12 points each to lead the visitors from Kelowna, B.C.

Sidhu added nine rebounds to go along with her 21 points to lead the Thunderbirds in both categories on the evening. Adrienne Parkin, Stephanie Bell, and Young each had eight rebounds of their own.
 
With the victory UBC remains atop the standings in the Pacific division with just two regular season games remaining in the regular season. They will play a home and home series next weekend against Victoria. The Vikes lost Saturday night and are one game back with a record of 14-6. Fraser Valley has an identical 15-5 record as the Thunderbirds after sweeping UNBC this weekend. The top two teams in the division will host a quarterfinal match up in the first round of the playoffs.

Cascades-Timberwolves Stats

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - A big third quarter led the #7 Fraser valley Cascades to a handed win over the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday night.

The Cascades move to 15-5 after a 88-51 win over the now 4-16 UNCB Timberwolves.

The Cascades were led by fifth-year guard Aieisha Luyken. Luyken netted 18 points for the Cascades while Courtney Bartle added 12 of her own.

Mercedes VanKoughnett once again led the Timberwolves in scoring. The fifth year guard finished her final game at the Northern Sport Centre by leading both teams with 19 points and nine rebounds. Fellow fifth year Emily Kaehn (Hixon, BC) topped rebounding with 12 boards and chipped in 14 points.

The Cascades will face the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend. The Cascades will play in Langley on Thursday, February 13 and finish their season at home on Friday, February 15.

The UNBC Timberwolves will travel to Calgary, AB next weekend to finish their season against the Mount Royal Cougars. Games are set for Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15.

REGINA – The #4 Regina Cougars completed a weekend sweep over the Calgary Dinos with a 76-43 victory on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Nicole Clarke scored a game-high 18 points for the Cougars, marking the 11th time in the U of R's 20 conference games this season that the fifth-year guard has at least tied for the team lead in scoring. Clarke also led all players with nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double for the Cougars, who improve to 18-2 with the victory. Alyssia Kajati was 7-for-10 from the field and scored 16 points.
 
Calgary (11-9) was led by 10 points from Tamara Jarrett and Aimee Wilson. Jarrett added a team-high eight rebounds and also led the Dinos with four assists. The Dinos will now prepare for a home-and-home with Lethbridge to close out the Canada West schedule, still looking for a playoff spot.
 
The Cougars remain tied with Alberta (18-2) for top spot in the Prairie Division. The Pandas hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the U of R, so the Cougars will need at least one Saskatchewan win over Alberta next weekend to claim the division title even if the U of R finishes the conference schedule with a pair of home wins over Brandon.

WINNIPEG - The #5 Saskatchewan Huskies picked up a weekend split after a 74-57 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Satuday at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Saskatchewan with the victory improves their record to 17-3. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 11-9.

Kiera Lyons led the way for the Huskies finishing with a double-double consisting of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Trulsrud and Jordyn Halvorson each added 11.

Fourth-year guard Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Megan Noonan was next with 15 points.

Saskatchewan will wrap up their regular season schedule in Edmonton next weekend against the Alberta Pandas. Winnipeg will close out the regular season with a home and home series against Manitoba.

WINNIPEG – The #3 Alberta  Pandas extended their winning streak to 17 games with a win over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
 
Alberta won 72-58 and improves to 18-2 on the season. Manitoba's loss puts their record at 4-16.
 
Allison Balasko helped lead her Bisons throughout the game. She finished with a double-double, rebounding 10 times, and scoring 15 points.
 
The second half saw the Pandas extend their lead, going ahead by as many as 21. Maddie Rogers, who came off the bench to net 17 total points, 11 of them coming in the second half, led her Alberta team.
 
Manitoba will next play on Thursday against the Winnipeg Wesmen in the 23rd annual Duckworth Challenge. Alberta will be home next weekend for their final two regular season games against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

VICTORIA – The Victoria Vikes were forced to swallow a split weekend after the visiting Thompson Rivers WolfPack battled hard for a 84-82 win at McKinnon Gym on Saturday.

The Vikes now drop 14-6, while the WolfPack improve 11-9 in the Pacific Division.

Jenna Bugiardini and Sarah Semeniuk each put up a 20-point game on the night, while Semeniuk was the lone Vike to get the double-double that included 10 rebounds. Third-year guard Shaylyn Crisp put up two outside shots to end the night with 14 points.
 
For Thompson Rivers it was Jorri Duxbury who put the WolfPack on her shoulders, playing all 40 minutes and logging 24 points and draining three of five attempts from beyond the arc. The height of post Kassie Colonna was too much for the Vikes as the Kamloops native added 17 points.
 
The Vikes look to regroup before their home-and-home series with UBC next weekend, Feb. 14-15, to close out the regular season.
 
The Feb. 14 game will also be the Vikes' annual Shoot for the Cure game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, while UVic will also honour their graduating players in their final regular season home game. The games will be broadcast live at canadawest.tv.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars snapped their fifteen game losing streak defeating Trinity Western 69-54.

Danica Rybachuk led all scorers with 27 points while teammates Alicia Tan and Jordan McLean added 12 each. Laurissa Weigl led TWU with 14 points.

After earning their second win of the season the Cougars improve to 2-18. TWU drops to 4-16.

Trinity Western will have a quick turnaround, when they will host Fraser Valley in their final home game on Thursday night.

The Cougars will play out their final two games next weekend when UNBC comes to town.

BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Bobcats ended theie home schedule on a high-note with a 70-59 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night, earning the weekend split.
 
The ‘Cats were led by Cassie Cooke's game-high 20 points, who finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds to go along with six assists and five steals.
 
Kaela Cranston added 15 points in the win, while Stephanie Haynes added 11 points. Playing in her final home game, fifth-year Jaynell Gillett was solid, finishing with seven points and nine rebounds.
 
The win improves Brandon's record to 6-14, while Lethbridge has the same record.
 
Up next for Brandon is a weekend road-trip to Regina to close out the 2013-14 Canada West regular season, while the Pronghorns will play a home and home series against the Calgary Dinos.

Pandas-Bisons Stats

WINNIPEG  - Despite a solid effort on the defensive end, the Manitoba Bisons were unable to topple Canada West's top team, the #3-ranked Alberta Pandas, on Friday at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Manitoba lost 73-54 and fall to 4-15 on the season. The Pandas win their 16th straight and move to 17-2.

Alberta was led by 14 points from Saskia Van Ginhoven, but they also got a great game off the bench from Kendra Asleson, who put in 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in an assertive performance.

Manitoba was led by Sheree Carmona-Galdamez, Allison Balasko and Claire Harvery - all had ten points each. Balasko had 12 rebounds for the double-double, while first-year Harvery's 20 minutes came in key times when the Bisons were threatening.

The Bisons finish their weekend back-to-back against Alberta on Saturday at 5 p.m.

REGINA – The Regina Cougars blew the game wide open in the third quarter and coasted to a 90-57 win over Calgary on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The Cougars led by just nine at the half, but opened the third quarter on a 16-4 run and never looked back. The U of R outscored the Dinos by a 23-9 margin in the third and 23-13 in the fourth to pull away from Calgary for a 33-point win.
 
The three-way tie for first in the Prairie Division is down to two teams, as Saskatchewan lost to Winnipeg on Friday to fall to 16-3 on the season. The Cougars and Alberta – which topped Manitoba on the road – are now tied for the division lead with a 17-2 mark.
 
Nicole Clarke, Alyssia Kajati, and Charlotte Kot all scored 14 points for the Cougars to tie for the game high.
 
Tamara Jarrett led Calgary (11-8) with 13 points, while Ashley Hirons added 11.
 
The two teams will meet again at the CKHS on Saturday night with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.

WINNIPEG - Deadly outside shooting lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 72-67 upset victory over the #5 Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with a double-double consisting of 25 points and 14 rebounds. She was also a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point territory. Alyssa Grant added 18 points, including four-three pointers.

Kelsey Trulsrud led the Huskies in points with 16. She also had 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Third-year post Dalyce Emmerson added 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 11-8 and still remains in the playoff hunt for the final spot in the Prairie Division. Saskatchewan with the loss drops to 16-3.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The UNBC Timberwolves fought until the end but could not overcome the #7 Fraser Valley Cascades at the Northern Sport Centre on Friday, losing 79-63.

Fraser Valley improves to 14-5, with UNBC dropping to 4-15.

Forward Sarah Wierks lead the Cascades with 19 points and eight rebounds. Courtney Bartel put up 17 of her own while grabbing eight boards and Aieisha Luyken added another 16 to the Cascades' total.

Leading the Timberwolves was fifth-year forward Mercedes VanKoughnett, with 18 points and 10 boards, while Jen Bruce chipped in 14 points along with Emily Kaehn.

The Cascades and Timberwolves will return to the Northern Sport Centre again on Saturday, 6 p.m. live at canadawest.tv.

VANCOUVER - The #10 UBC Thunderbirds extended their winning streak to seven games on Friday night with a commanding 83-57 win over the 3-16 UBC Okanagan Heat. With the victory, UBC improves its conference record to 14-5 and remains tied atop the Canada West Pacific Division.
 
Harleen Sidhu was seemingly unstoppable in the first quarter, going 6-for-6 from the field; she led the Thunderbirds to success with a game-high 22 points, making 11 of her 16 field goal attempts, while Stephanie Bell and Cassandra Knievel had 13 and 12, respectively.
 
Emily Kanester, Sarah Allison, and Claire Elliott each tallied 10 points and two steals for the Heat. Kanester also led the team with five rebounds.
 
Friday's game supported KidSport Vancouver, a charity that provides funding for families who can't afford to put their kids into sports. Every made UBC foul shot and missed UBCO foul shot resulted in a $20 donation from UBC Athletics. That combined with money raised through a raffle at the game, a $795 cheque was presented to the foundation at the end of the game.
 
The same teams will finish off the weekend doubleheader on Saturday at War Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Victoria 77 Thompson Rivers 60

VICTORIA – It was the Jenna Bugiardini show in Victoria as the Victoria Vikes defeated the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 77-60 on Friday at McKinnon Gym.

The second-year guard becomes one of three Vikes to reach more than 31 points in a game in the last decade following Debbie Yeboah (32) in 2012 and Kayla Dykstra (33) in 2009.

The win lifts the Vikes to a 14-5 record, on track for the Pacific Division title, while Thompson Rivers drop to 10-9.
 
Reigning Canada West Rookie of the Year, Bugiardini, had a 24-point first half to end the night with 33 points and eight rebounds, while Jenny Lewis came off the bench to add 13 points.
 
The WolfPack were led in scoring by none other than Jorri Duxbury, who was all over the court for 22 points, while Kassie Colonna's six-foot-two size got her 10 points on the scoresheet.

Both teams will meet again on Saturday, McKinnon Gym at 5 p.m., live at canadawest.tv.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars were defeated 61-57 by the TWU Spartans, Friday on Kenyon Court.

Janelle Traber, Kayla Gordon and Chantelle Martin all had 14 points for the Spartans. Jordan McLean led the Cougars with 13 points followed by Danica Rybachuk and Angela Driscoll with 11.

The Cougars have fallen to a record of 1-18.  The Spartans now own a record of 5-14 and have moved ahead of the UNBC Timberwolves in the standings.

These teams will resume their series tomorrow night at Kenyon Court. Tip-off is set for 5:00pm.

BRANDON, MB – A last-minute rally from the Brandon Bobcats wasn't enough as the ‘Cats fell 64-62 to the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Four Pronghorns finished in double-digit scoring, led by Ali Cameron's team-high 19 points. Kim Veldman added 12 points while Mariah Miller and Katlyn Olsen each contributed 10 points.
 
Brandon was led by Cassie Cooke's game-high 22 points, who also finished a few assists shy of a triple-double with 10 board and seven assists, to go along with six steals. Kaela Cranston added 16 points and eight boards for the Bobcats
 
The win improves Lethbridge's record to 6-13, while Brandon falls to 5-14.

The teams meet again on Saturday night in the final game of the weekend series in Brandon.
