SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies finished with an efficient .408 kill percentage to knock off the MacEwan University Griffins 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23) Friday night at the PAC.
Saskatchewan put home 59 kills in 103 attacks with only 17 errors to improve to 10-9 on the season. MacEwan 1-16 with the loss.
Tyler Epp and Jordan Nowakowski led Saskatchewan with 14 kills. Epp finished the match with a .545 kill percentage to go along with his 2.5 blocks. Andrew Nelson led the team with eight digs to go along with his 13 kills.
Ryan McDonald led the Griffins with 14 kills in the match. Matt Mohler had 4.5 blocks and nine digs to lead MacEwan in both categories.
Saskatchewan raced out to a 10-point lead with a 6-0 run. The Huskies would maintain to take the set 25-14.
The Griffins surprised the Huskies in the second set with a quick spurt midway through to go up four. Saskatchewan was able to tie things up at 21, but the Griffins weren't going to be denied a 25-23 set win.
The Huskies worked the lead early in the third and kept a comfortable three point lead. Tyler Epp would finish things off with an ace.
MacEwan looked like it might take the fourth and force a fifth holding the lead midway through the set. Saskatchewan turned it around just in time to tie it up at 20. Jordan Nowakowski finished off a CJ Gavlas set for the Huskie victory.
The two teams meet again at 8 p.m. Saturday night at the PAC.
