Wesmen Rebound To Beat Bisons In Three

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen rebounded in a big way from a tough five set loss two days ago to record a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) victory Saturday afternoon at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre.

Both teams came into the contest with equal records and both ranked in the CIS Top 10.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 13-9 and currently in fourth place in the Canada West Men's Volleyball Conference standings. Manitoba with the loss sits at 12-10.

Fifth year outside hitter Tom Douglas-Powell led the Wesmen with 18 kills and three service aces. Matthew Dueck had seven kills and three blocks. Logan Brennan led the team with eight defensive digs.

Devren Dear led Manitoba with 14 kills. Adam DeJonckheere was next with eight.

The two cross town rivals battled in the early stages of the opening set. The teams exchanged points to 8-8 until Douglas-Powell had three kills to pace the Wesmen to a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. The combination of Douglas-Powell and Dueck came alive down the stretch with key kills to help the Wesmen win the opening set 25-22.

Set number two started out on equal terms with the teams battling to a score of 6-6. The teams continued to exchange points 14-14 but soon after back to back kills by Dueck and Doughlas-Powell gave Winnipeg a 16-15 lead at the timeout. Winnipeg with momentum on their side went on a 9-3 run to win the second set 25-18.

Winnipeg jumped ahead 7-2 in the third set and never looked back taking a 16-15 lead at the technical break and eventually winning the third set 25-23 to close out the match.

The Wesmen will play host to the Trinity Western University Spartans next Friday and Saturday. Manitoba will travel tplay MacEwan.
