Lueck leads Cougars to four-set win over MacEwan

Matthew Lueck matched his career high with 16 kills as the University of Regina's men's volleyball team won in four over visiting MacEwan on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The two teams split the opening two sets with the Cougars winning 25-20 in the first before MacEwan came back with a 25-19 win in the second, but it was all Cougars from there. Regina won 25-17 in the third set and 25-19 in the fourth to clinch the win in the first ever Canada West meeting between the two teams.

Lueck had just three errors on his 35 attacks, finishing with a .371 hitting percentage and also adding six digs and three blocks. Andre Borgeaud had 12 kills and 12 digs, while Carter Howe added 10 kills and six digs for the Cougars (2-19). Rookie setter Michael Corrigan also had a solid match for the U of R, finishing with career highs in both assists (42) and kills (4) and chipping in with seven digs.

Fourth-year libero Jacques Borgeaud had another fine game for the Cougars, collecting 16 digs as he's now just barely behind Trinity Western's Tyler Koslowsky for the Canada West lead in digs per set. With 190 digs on the season, he needs 20 in the team's final three matches of the conference schedule to surpass his own school single-season record of 209 set back during the 2011-12 season.

MacEwan (0-21) was led by Damon Holmen's 15 kills, but the fourth-year outside hitter also had 13 errors to finish with an .044 hitting percentage. Zach Brown had 13 kills and hit .281, while setter Matt Mohler had 37 assists and 13 digs for a double-double.

The two teams will play the back half of their weekend set on Saturday night at the CKHS (6:30, canadawest.tv).

NOTES: Andre Borgeaud still needs one more service ace to become the school's career leader ... that ace will also give him 19 for the season, which will pull him into a tie with former teammate – and fellow Australian – Rhodri Simmonds for the most in a single season by a U of R player ... the Cougars hit .448 as a team in the third set, collecting 17 kills and just four errors on 29 attacks.
