Griffins have complete game effort, but come up short in loss to Dinos

The MacEwan University men's volleyball team put together their most complete match of the season, but fell short in a closely contested match 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 26-24) to the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at City Center Gymnasium.

In control for the majority of the first set thanks to consistently tough team serving, the Griffins' Cristian Sides picked up a pair of aces to spur a 5-0 Griffins run in the early going.  But, a stretch of unforced errors late by the Griffins gave life to the Dinos' who would take the set 25-23. Keith West picked up where he left off last night with seven kills for the Dinos.

West was blisteringly efficacy, posting a two-set hitting percentage of .917 on 12 attempts.  The Griffins however managed to keep pace in the competitive set before the Dinos' took over late, closing the set on a 6-1 run for the 25-20 win. Damon Holemen paced the Griffins offensively with four kills.

Once again the Griffins started out strong in the third set, but it was the Dinos who would take advantage of eight attack errors by the Griffins to close the match with a 26-24 set victory.

Sides served tough throughout the game to register three aces and finished with seven kills and four block assists to earn player of the game honours. The Dinos award went to a well deserving West who finished with a game-high 17 kills and hit at a .652 efficiency on 23 attempts.

The Griffins will hit the road for a pair of games against the University of Regina Cougars with the first match scheduled for Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. The Dinos head home to host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds with the first match scheduled for Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
