BIG THIRD SET WIN LEADS MANITOBA TO VICTORY

Using momentum from an extra point third set win, the No. 7 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the No. 10 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 33-31, 25-16) Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

After trading the first two sets, Manitoba stormed back from a 19-12 deficit in the third game to win 33-31. After a Kevin Falconer kill to make the game 20-14, Manitoba scored the next six points to pull to a 20-20 tie. The two opponents tied the set 11 more times before Bisons' outside hitters Ken Rooney and Devren Dear end the set 33-31.

Manitoba took the momentum from the win, walking to a 25-16 win in the fourth set for the victory.

Both Manitoba and Saskatchewan have 11-8 records after the match and are two points behind the fourth place Winnipeg Wesmen. The top seven teams earn a date in the Canada West men's volleyball post season with first receiving a bye to the Final Four. Second, third and fourth place teams host a quarter-final series.

Rooney led the Bisons with 17 kills on the night, while Adam DeJonckheere added another 15 and Dear 14. Alex Strachan tallied a match-high 17 digs.

Fifth-year outside hitter Paul Thomson led the Huskies with 13 kills and Matthew Busse added another nine kills. Libero Matthew Erickson and setter Zak Rempel each recorded eight digs.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. and can be viewed on canadawest.tv
