Griffins come up short in loss to ‘Pack

In the end, the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack had an extra gear as they defeated the MacEwan University Griffins 3-1 (25-12, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18) at the City Centre Campus Gymnasium in Edmonton, Alberta.

Solid blocking from the outset allowed the 'Pack to romp through the opening set while posting 14 blocks in the statistical column.  Brandon Hewwing let the block party with five, propelling his team to a 25-15 opening set victory.

Finding their way in the second, Cristian Sides picked up where he ended last match for the Griffins, rekindling chemistry with setter Matt Mohler to finish the second set with four kills, prompting a valuable momentum shift in favour of the home team. The Wolfpack would go on to take the second set 25-14.

The third set witnessed resurgence from the Griffins as they utilized a strong team blocking effort adding eight blocks to their match tally taking the third set 25-22. The 'Pack continued to utilize a revolving door of hitters as Graham Stoliker managed his team's offence effectively.

In the final set the Griffins and 'Pack battled hard in the seesaw early going, but it would be the Wolfpack who would pull away in the later stages to claim the 25-18 victory.

Cristian Sides and Stuart Richey would be named players of the game for the Griffins and Wolfpack respectively.

MacEwan University will head on the road for a weekend series at Trinity Western Spartans, while the Wolfpack head home to host for a Thursday/Saturday split with the UBCO Heat.
