'Pack too much for shorthanded Griffins

The MacEwan University Griffins dropped a tough match to the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon at City Center Gymnasium.

Unable to match each other's energy levels, the Wolfpack came out strong to grab a quick 8-3 lead. The Griffins regained their footing in the later stages of the set, but eventually dropped the opener 25-16. Casey Knight led the way for the 'Pack with four kills.

In the second set the Griffins came out with more conviction, keeping the score close in the early stages. However, the Wolfpack would rally late to take the set 25-15. Knight continued to play well for the 'Pack adding eight kills. Matt Mohler picked up nine assists in the set for the Griffins.

Improving as the game progressed, the Griffins' middles were the bright spot for the home team. Cristian Sides and Sean Piester had standout games, combining for 12 of the 29 kills for the Griffins. The Wolfpack's offence would be too much however, as they took the third set 25-18.

Sides finished the game with a team-high six kills and three block assists to earn player of the game honours for the Griffins. For the Wolfpack, Graham Stoliker dished out a game-high 29 assists to lead his team's attack.

The 'Pack and Griffins will meet again Sunday afternoon for the rematch with the match slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at City Center Gymnasium.
