SPARTANS KNOCK OFF WOLFPACK IN FINAL ROUND ROBIN GAME

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – The Trinity Western men's volleyball team won its last game of the round robin at the 2015 McDonald's/TRU International Tournament, beating Thompson Rivers 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-12) Sunday morning at the Tournament Capital Centre.

With both teams having already secured a spot in Sunday evening's gold medal match, the morning's tilt featured young lineups on both sides of the net.

The Spartans were led by Tyler Heppell (Langley, B.C.), who had 15 kills, and Ben Lieuwen (Abbotsford, B.C.), who had 11 kills. Levi Wolthuis (Carbondale, Alta.) had eight kills and a match-high six blocks while Riley Vander Meulen (Edmonton) had seven kills and five blocks. Setter Scott Plocktis (Kelowna, B.C.) had 35 assists and libero Carter Bergen (Winnipeg) had a match-high 13 digs.

Tim Edge was TRU's top attacker with 11 kills while Jordan Foot had a team-leading five blocks.

"It was a pretty good game with all of the young guns out there for both groups battling," said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. "I thought we had good performances from Levi and Riley and Scott. It was a good development game. Overall it was a pretty good game. It wasn't all that clean, but it was really competitive and the intensity was high."

The Spartans and WolfPack will play in the tournament championship match at 6 p.m.
