Dinos capture win in marathon fourth set over Cougars

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos took down the Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 36-34) at Jack Simpson Gymnasium on Dec. 3.

This improves Calgary's record to 6-9 while the Cougars drop to 8-7.

Keith West led the Dinos with a game-high 21 kills and ten digs, followed closely by Braden O'Toole who had another 20 kills. LiberoParker Maris recorded a game-high 16 digs while brother Jackson Maris added 47 assists on the night.

For the Cougars, middle Grigor Kartev had a team-high 12 kills. Tyler Schmidt and Lucas King added nine each. Both Jordan Parkin and Jordan Or recorded 11 digs.
Calgary got off to a slow start in the first set, but O'Toole was the main source of offense for the Dinos as they tried to close the gap. After being down 16-14 at the technical timeout, Calgary went on a 4-0 to take their first lead of the set, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. It was all Dinos momentum in the second half of the set as they went on to win it 25-22.

In the second, Mount Royal took another 4-1 lead to start it off, but it was a 3-0 run that gave the Dinos the lead at 7-5. A number of mistakes from the Cougars ended up costing them, leading Calgary to a four-point lead at the technical. With the defence and offense firing on all cylinders, the Dinos cruised to a 25-17 win.

Up 2-0, it was the same story for Mount Royal as they took an early lead in the set. It took until the 14th point for the Dinos to tie it up. Despite fighting back, the Dinos were unable to hold off the Cougars offence which caused them all kinds of problems in the second half of the set. When the visitors took a 19-16 lead, they never looked back, extending the match to a fourth set with a 25-21 victory.

The fourth set was another bad start for Calgary as they went down 6-2. Offence from Sean Tuff helped the Dinos get back on track, tying the game up at 10. Trading leads and points, both teams fought hard. But the battle really began as the set started to seemingly come to a close. Despite a 22-19 lead from Calgary, the Cougars went on a 3-0 run to tie it. From there, the teams literally traded points and remained tied up until the 34th points for each team. It was second-year left-side West that finished off the game for Calgary, recording kills on the last two points to take the set 36-34.

The Dinos head to Mount Royal for the second match in the home-and-home series. They play on Friday at Kenyon Court at 8pm.
