UBC Okanagan scores three-set sweep over Cougars

The UBC Okanagan Heat pulled out a three-set men's volleyball victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport, winning 25-18, 29-27, and 27-25.

The Heat held the Cougars to a -.233 hitting percentage in a first set which they won 25-18, but the second and third sets were more closely contested. The second set saw 15 tie scores and five lead changes, with the Cougars coming back from a 19-14 deficit with an 8-2 run to pull ahead of the Heat. The Cougars had four set points in the second but couldn't finish it off, and UBC Okanagan got a kill from Joshua Harvey and back-to-back attack errors by the Cougars gave the Heat a 29-27 win.

The third set was similar to the second, with UBC Okanagan taking a five-point lead before the Cougars battled back late to tie up the set at 24-24. But after the teams traded points to make the score 25-25, the Heat got a block from Harvey and Kyle Pankratz and Lars Bornemann's match-leading 14th kill of the night gave the visitors the victory.

Besides Bornemann's 14 kills, UBC Okanagan (2-12) also had nine kills from Alex Swiatlowski and eight from both Harvey and Pankratz. Harvey's eight kills came on eight attacks, giving the third-year middle from Cochrane, Alta. a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage for the match. Kristof Schlagintweit finished with 34 assists for UBC Okanagan, while libero Jeremy Fostvelt led all players with 11 digs. Harvey and Pankratz led the Heat at the net with eight and seven blocks, respectively.

Andre Borgeaud was solid for the Cougars, registering a team-leading 12 kills while tying libero Jacques Borgeaud for the team high with nine digs. Michael Corrigan spent most of the game at setter for the U of R, ending up with 21 kills and eight digs.

UBC Okanagan will look to extend its winning streak next weekend with a pair of home matches against Canada West newcomer MacEwan, while the Cougars (1-11) close out the first half of the conference schedule on the road next Friday and Saturday at Brandon.
