Griffins unable to comeback in loss to Huskies

On a snowy night in Edmonton, the MacEwan University Griffins men's volleyball team was unable to complete the comeback dropping a 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21) decision to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday evening at City Center Gymnasium.

Jumping out to a strong start in the first set, Jordan Nowakowski's service game spurred the visiting Huskies to an 8-0 run late, propelling his Huskies to take the set 25-14. Tyler Epp was a force in the middle, going six for six on kill attempts for the Huskies.

A better defensive effort witnessed the Griffins register five blocks in the second set, led by the veteran Sean Peister who recorded three block assists. Shane Kerrison's four kills led a balanced Griffins attack as they evened the match at one set apiece with the 25-17 set victory.

The third set was a closely contested one as the Huskies picked up 16 kills, many ricocheting off the would-be blockers. Nowakowski continued his strong game for the Huskies with five kills to take the third set 25-21.

The fourth set witnessed the Huskies begin quickly and rarely looking back. Nowakowski was a force from the service line, leading his team on an 8-0 run. The Griffins chipped away late in the set to close the gap, but were unable to complete the comeback, dropping the fourth set 25-21.

The Griffins Zach Brown had a strong all-around game finishing with six kills, five digs and three blocks to be honoured with the player of the game honours. The Huskies award went to Tyler Epp who finished with an impressive 56 per cent hitting efficiency with 11 kills on 16 attempts from the middle position.

The Griffins (0-12) will head on the road to conclude their first semester as they take on the UBC – Okanagan Heat (2-12) in Kelowna. The Huskies (7-5) will head home to host the UBC Thunderbirds (9-4) in Saskatoon.
