Wesmen Sweep Heat, Extend Winning Streak To Six

There was no scare for the home team on this day. A day after surviving a scare from the winless UBC Okanagan Heat, the Winnipeg Wesmen rebounded with a convincing 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-15) victory over the Heat Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg extends it's winning streak to six and improves to 7-1 in regular season play. The Heat remain winless in the regular season at 0-10.

Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with a match high 10 kills. David Bommersbach followed with eight. Tom Douglas-Powell finished with seven. Logan Brennan led the team with 11 digs. Matthew Dueck was in on four blocks. Bommersbach and Schouten shared the lead in aces with three.

Lars Bornemann led the Heat with six kills. Jeremy Fostvelt was the team leader in digs with seven.

Winnipeg finished the match with 12 service aces and it was evident early on that serving would play a big part in the opening set.

The Wesmen built a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout and relied on strong serving down the stretch The Wesmen pounded home six aces in the set, with three coming from David Bommersbach late in the set to pace the Wesmen to a 25-10 win in set number one.

In the second set Winnipeg held a close 16-14 lead at the technical break. The Heat used the timeout to their advantage scoring four straight points to take a 18-16 lead on the Wesmen. Winnipeg's offensive attack came alive late in the set. Three kills by Schouten helped Winnipeg win the second set by a margin of 25-23.

Winnipeg went for the kill in set number three, jumping out to a 16-4 lead and were never threatened winning the final set of the match 25-15.

Winnipeg will be on the road against Thompson Rivers next week. UBCO will be home to Saskatchewan.
