COUGARS SWEEP HUSKIES

Calgary — The Mount Royal University Cougars ended their Halloween weekend with some treats as they swept their series with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 both Friday and Saturday.

Tonight, MRU won the sets 25-23, 25-16 and 25-23 after winning in three straight last night.

The first set was balanced and back-and-forth between the two teams. The Cougars' biggest lead was five. Riley Friesen had four kills, while Paul Thomson recorded six.

The Cougars' defence, specifically their blocking, was a main factor in the team winning the second set 25-16. Lucas King, making his first start of the season, picked up numerous blocks, while Grigor Kartev and Jordan Parkin also rose above the net and shutdown the opposition.

In the third set, Tyler Schmidt raced out to a quick start, recording kills on four of the Cougars' first nine points. The blocks continued for the Cougars in the set, and after Saskatchewan trimmed the Cougars' lead to just one at 24-23, King came up with a match-ending block to seal the three-set sweep for the Cougars.

Parkin was all over the court for the Cougars, racking up 11 kills, 12 digs and four blocks. Friesen had 11 kills, Schmidt had nine, while King, who picked up his first kill of the year, recorded seven blocks. Kartev lead the game with eight blocks.

Paul Thomson had 16 kills in the loss for the Huskies, while Colin Fraser put up nine.

With the win, Mount Royal moves to 5-3 while the struggling Huskies fall to 1-5.

Next week, the Cougars head to Regina to face the other Cougars in the conference, who are 1-4 on the season.
