Griffins give up sweep to Bobcats

Unable to find their consistency, the MacEwan University Griffins fell to the Brandon Bobcats 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-22) in a briskly paced match Saturday night in Edmonton.

While the Bobcats began the first set on a six to one run, it was the loss of the Griffins outside hitter Marcus Ernewein that seemed to draw the air out of the early portion of the match. Ernewein left the game after landing awkwardly on his teammates foot. He would return briefly in the second, but would be lifted from the game for precautionary reasons.

The Bobcats would win the opening set 25-15.

In the second set, the Bobcats opened up a 9-1 lead before Zach Brown brought the Griffins back within striking distance with a service run that included a pair of aces.

David Stasica controlled the offence for the Bobcats, dishing out 11 assists as the Bobcats took the second set 25-17.

Set three was more closely contested in the early going, but the Griffins would fall victim to giving up runs to the Bobcat.

Outside hitter Damon Holmen was named the player of the game for the Griffins, while Jeremy Davies turned in a solid defensive match in the libero position to earn the award.
