COUGARS MOVE ABOVE .500 WITH WIN

 

Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-14) tonight at Kenyon Court. Tyler Schmidt led the way for the Cougars with 11 points. Paul Thomson had a game-high 14 points for the Huskies.

 

The Cougars and Huskies went back and forth in a spirited first set. Mount Royal got out to a 15-12 lead and looked to be in firm control of the match.

 

Saskatchewan battled back going on a 9-2 run to take the lead and come within two points of the win. Grigor Kartev went off at the service line to give Mount Royal some serious momentum. After being down 23-20 the Cougars scored five straight points to win the set 25-23.

 

The second set was even closer. Both sides would take turns going on small runs throughout the set but it remained close.

 

Mount Royal then had a chance to win the game on serve with 23 points. The Cougars attack went into the net and the score was knotted again at 24. Tied at 25, the Cougars won the next two on attack errors and took a commanding 2-0 lead going into the third set.

 

The Cougars went down 7-5 quickly but again bounced right back with a seven point run to take a 12-7 lead.

 

 Grigor Kartev was a beast up the middle, blocking everything in sight. The Cougars rolled in the third set winning 25-14.

 

Mount Royal improves to 4-3 on the year while the Huskies drop to 1-4.

 

The rubber match is on tap for Saturday night at 6:30pm on Kenyon Court.
