COUGARS SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES WITH MACEWAN

Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars win 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25 -21, 25-21 ) over the MacEwan Griffins Marcus Ernewein led the attack for MacEwan , while the Cougars were led by Jordan Parkin and Riley Friesen who tied for top points with 11 kills each.

Mount Royal got off to a good start in the first set, but allowed the Griffins to take the lead with a handful of serving errors. The Cougars rallied and came back to make it close match, but MacEwan held on to win the first set 25-20.

Despite struggling in the first, Mount Royal bounced back in the second, thanks to the attacking play of fourth year outside hitter, Jordan Parkin.  The Cougars also managed to fix their serving issue from the first set, scoring four ace points. MacEwan fought back to make the set close, but the Cougars took it 25-21.

The neck and neck play continued in the third set, as Mount Royal continued to play smart volleyball, but the Griffins never let them out of their sight. The set was back and forth until the final points, when the Cougars were able to pull ahead and win the set 25-21.

The fourth set started much like the rest of the match in a see-saw battle between Mount Royal and MacEwan. The two teams exchanged points until the end of the match, when a kill by fourth year Business student Michael Wickstrom turned the tide. French import Grigor Kartev followed that Wickstrom's performance with a huge ace point to lead the Cougars to a fourth set victory and back-to-back wins at home.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

The Cougars improve to 3-3 on the season while the Griffins fall to 0-6.

MRU returns to action October 31st at home against Saskatchewan.
