Cougars swept in three by Winnipeg

The University of Regina's men's volleyball team was defeated by Winnipeg in three sets on Friday night in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Winnipeg won the first set by a 25-21 score, then won both the second and third sets by 25-18 margins to claim the match and improve to 4-1 on the season.

As they've done all season long, Casey Schouten and Tom Douglas-Powell led the Winnipeg offence. Both players ended up with 11 kills, with Douglas-Powell's coming with just two errors on 20 attacks for a .450 hitting percentage. Schouten hit .269 in the win, while setter Joshua McKay dished out 36 assists while controlling Winnipeg offence that hit .430 as a team.

McKay and David Bommersbach each had five digs, while Brendan Black had seven kills, hit .500, and led all players with seven blocks.

The Cougars (0-3) had a fine outing from Steve Carston, who had kills on eight of his first nine attacks and ended up leading all players with a .545 hitting percentage. Rookies Dalton Wolfe and Michael Corrigan split the setting duties, with Corrigan finishing with 15 assists and Wolfe with 13. Andre Borgeaud tied McKay and Bommersbach for the match lead with five digs.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night following the conclusion of the women's match. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

NOTES: Dylan Coffey played his first Canada West match as a Cougar, coming in as a late sub in both the second and third sets.
