Wesmen Too Much For Griffins On This Day

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball team defeated the visiting Macewan University Griffins in three sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg, now 3-1 completes a weekend sweep after defeating the Griffins 3-0 Friday night. The loss drops MacEwan to 0-4.

Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Tom Douglas-Powell and Brendan Black followed with seven each. Middle blockers Brendan Black and Matthew Dueck each were in on four blocks. Dueck had four solo blocks.

The Griffins were led by Marcus Ernewein's match high 17 kills. Jared Schubert led the team in digs with six.

The Wesmen had MacEwan in trouble in the first set jumping out to a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout. The Wesmen duo of Tom Douglas-Powell and Casey Schouten combined for five kills down the stretch to pace the Wesmen to a 25-16 opening set win.

In the second set back to back kills by Schouten helped Winnipeg open up a 16-12 technical break lead. Three attacking errors by the Griffins late in the set expanded the Wesmen lead to 2014. Winnipeg eventually went on to win the set 25-18.

The Griffins kept pace with the Wesmen in the third set. Winnipeg held a slim 16-13 lead at the break. MacEwan got back in the set taking advantage of some Winnipeg errors to trail by one at 17-16. Winnipeg settled down and some timely kills by Winnipeg's hitters closed out the set by a score of 25-21.

Winnipeg will travel next week to Regina to take on the Cougars. MacEwan will travel to Calgary to play Mount Royal.
