GOLDEN BEARS SWEEP SERIES IN BATTLE OF TOP 10 TEAMS

Four-year left side Ryley Barnes tallied 17 kills for the No. 1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-16) victory over the host-No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win, the Golden Bears remain undefeated in the young Canada West men's volleyball season with a 4-0 record and have yet to lose a set. Saskatchewan drops to 1-3. A night earlier, Alberta won 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21).

Barnes had a .517 attack percentage in the match and also added a service ace and five digs. John Goranson added another eight kills for Alberta in the match, while Taylor Arnett tallied six.

Fifth-year right side Matthew Busse led the Huskies with 10 kills in the loss, while third-year middle Tyler Epp added another six.

The Huskies stayed within two points of the Golden Bears throughout the start of the first set. But Alberta began to pull to larger a lead after a Goranson kill and a Kevin Proudfoot block sent the Golden Bears to the technical timeout at 16-12. From there, Alberta kept control and an Arnett attack the Huskies couldn't dig ended the set 25-17.

Once again, the Huskies stayed close with Alberta throughout the early part of the second set. But two Saskatchewan errors followed by a Barnes kill and an ace gave Alberta the five-point lead.  Three service errors in a row by the Huskies and Golden Bears ended the set 25-16.

Alberta was the first to the technical timeout in the third set with a 16-10 lead. Although the Huskies won long rallies it wasn't enough to close the large deficit. A Huskie attack that sailed out of bounds gave the Alberta 25-16 win.

Alberta returns home to host the Trinity Western Spartans, while the Huskies enter a bye week.
