Huskies Even Weekend Series With Road Win Against Wesmen

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies picked up their first victory of the 2014-2015 Canada West regular season with a hard fought 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 30-28) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan (1-1) dropped a five set thriller to Winnipeg (1-1) in the opening match of the weekend series Friday night.

Fifth year right side Matthew Busse led the Huskies with 20 kills and 12 defensive digs. Busse only made three attacking errors and finished with a hitting percentage of .447. Paul Thomson a fifth year left side finished with 15 kills. Tyler Epp was the leader in total blocks with eight.

Winnipeg was led by third year outside Casey Schouten's match high 26 kills. Fifth year outside Thomas Douglas-Powell was next with 11. Setter Joshua McKay had 45 assists, 11 digs and three blocks.

The match started out as a battle between the two evenly matched squads. The Huskies led 16-15 at the technical timeout of set number one and continued to hold off the Wesmen to lead 23-21 late. A determined Wesmen squad reeled off four straight points to win the set 25-23.

Saskatchewan had the early advantage in set number two leading 6-2 early on. Winnipeg with Brendan Black serving went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead and extended their lead to 16-13 at the break. Winnipeg had the lead late at 24-23 but a pair of attacking errors combined with a kill by Matthew Busse gave the Huskies the set at 26-24 to even the match.

Winnipeg was able to regroup in the tird set and led 16-14 at the technical timeout and 20-19 in the late stages of the pivotal third set. The Huskies turned up their game going on a 5-0 run to make the score 24-20 and eventually closed out the third set by a score of 25-22.

The fourth set was one for the ages with both squads battling for each and every point. The Huskies took the fourth set in extra points by a score of 30-28 to close out the match.

Saskatchewan will welcome the Alberta Golden Bears at home next weekend. Winnipeg will be on home court against MacEwan University.
